In wet season, rainfed area in Lower Northern of Thailand has has an abundance of soil and water availability which is suitable for growing a photoperiod-sensitive rice with high yield potential. However, favorite rice varieties often have low yield and are susceptible to rice pests. Breeding for high yield and resistance to disease and insect pests while maintaining good eating quality is, therefore, the major approaches in changing rice varieties for good qualities, increased yield and adequate consumption.
